Pelotas was erected as a diocese in 1910 and elevated to a metropolitan archdiocese by Pope Benedict XVI on April 13, 2011. It is the metropolitan see of the ecclesiastical province of Pelotas in Rio Grande do Sul, with suffragans Bage and Rio Grande.
