In the city of São João del-Rei stands its cathedral, the Cathedral Basilica of Our Lady of the Pillar, São João del Rei, a minor basilica dedicated to Our Lady of the Pillar.

  • CNBB manifests deep sorrow and solidarity to families and communities of Itumirim

    The presidency of the National Conference of Bishops of Brazil (CNBB) expressed sorrow and solidarity with the families and communities of Itumirim following a bus accident that killed six pilgrims on Sunday, September 20. The bus was carrying faithful from the Rosário district to the National Sanctuary of Our Lady of Aparecida when it fell into a ravine in Cruzeiro, São Paulo. In a statement released Monday, September 21, the CNBB presidency joined Bishop José Eudes Campos do Nascimento, the Diocese of São João del-Rei, priests, deacons, and the families and friends of the victims in prayer for the deceased. The CNBB also expressed solidarity with those injured in the accident, asking for their recovery. The bishops entrusted the victims to the mercy of God and the intercession of Our Lady of Aparecida.
