Catedral Metropolitana Nossa Senhora da Assunção e São Paulo stands in São Paulo, the church that holds the cathedra from which this see takes its name.
On what a cathedral is, see the cathedral; every see church on earth is gathered at the cathedrals.
History
A Latin Church archdiocese of the Catholic Church in Brazil, São Paulo is known in Latin as Archidioecesis Sancti Pauli in Brasilia and in Portuguese as Arquidiocese de São Paulo. Odilo Scherer has led it since Pope Benedict XVI appointed him on 21 March 2007. That appointment closed almost four decades of Franciscan leadership, since both of his predecessors, Cardinals Paulo Evaristo Arns and Cláudio Hummes, were members of that Order.
