History

In north-central Sicily, the Latin Diocese of Cefalù (Latin: Dioecesis Cephaludensis) carries a layered history. During the 8th and 9th centuries, under the Greek church, it was a suffragan of the metropolitanate of Syracuse in the Patriarchate of Constantinople. The Latin rite diocese founded under the Normans in 1131 became instead a suffragan of the archdiocese of Messina, and in 2000 Pope John Paul II placed Cefalù under the Archdiocese of Palermo.
