Latin-rite diocese covering the municipality of Shanghai, China, erected as an apostolic vicariate in 1933 and elevated to diocese in 1946; it is a suffragan of the Archdiocese of Nanjing. Its seat is St. Ignatius Cathedral in Xujiahui, and the Marian shrine of Sheshan lies within the diocese. Bishop Joseph Shen Bin was installed in 2023 and recognized by the Holy See on July 15, 2023.

History

The Diocese of Shanghai (Latin: Dioecesis Sciamhævensis; Chinese: 天主教上海教区) is a Latin Catholic diocese in the municipality of Shanghai, China. Its origins lie in the decree Omnia Quæ Catholicæ of Pope Pius XI, which established the Apostolic Vicariate of Shanghai on 25 April 1933. Pope Pius XII elevated the vicariate to a diocese by his Pontifical decree Quotidie Nos on 11 April 1946, and the same Pope later decreed an office for the Apostolic Nunciature through Per Multas Gravesque on 6 July 1946. The diocese today is a suffragan of the Archdiocese of Nanking.
