History

The Archdiocese of Durban grew out of the Vicariate Apostolic of Natal, erected on 15 November 1850 and raised on 11 January 1951 to an archdiocese under its present title. A Church census from 2002 recorded 217,468 Catholics across 74 parishes. The Metropolitan Province of Durban includes the suffragan dioceses of Dundee, Eshowe, Kokstad, Marianhill, Umtata and Umzimkulu.
