Latin rite metropolitan archdiocese in southern Ecuador, founded as the Diocese of Cuenca on 1 July 1786 and elevated to a metropolitan archdiocese on 9 April 1957. Its suffragan sees are Azogues, Loja and Machala. Its seat is the Catedral de la Inmaculada Concepcion (New Cathedral) in Cuenca, consecrated for worship in 1967.

History
First erected on 1 July 1786 as the Diocese of Cuenca, from territory belonging to the Archdiocese of Quito, this see in the Ecuadorian city of Cuenca was raised to archdiocesan rank on 9 April 1957. Its Latin title is Archidioecesis Conchensis in Aequatore.
