History
Equatorial Guinea's Catholic community forms part of the worldwide Catholic Church under the spiritual leadership of the Pope in Rome. In 2023 nearly 90% of the population identified as Christian, of whom 71% were Roman Catholics, alongside a few thousand Protestants. This share of Catholics, among the highest in Africa, reflects the country's history as a former Spanish colony. The church there is organized into five dioceses, one of which is an archdiocese.
