Latin rite metropolitan archdiocese covering Mumbai, India, established as the Apostolic Vicariate of Bombay in 1820 and elevated to archdiocese on 1 September 1886 by Pope Leo XIII. Its seat is the Cathedral of the Holy Name in Mumbai, with Nashik, Poona and Vasai as suffragan dioceses. Its patrons are St. Gonsalo Garcia and St. Francis Xavier.

History

With its episcopal see in Bombay (Mumbai), the Archdiocese of Bombay is a Latin Church archdiocese of the Catholic Church covering the northern Konkan division of Maharashtra, India. The Cathedral of the Holy Name is its cathedral, and it also administers an important minor basilica, the Basilica of Our Lady of the Mount in the Bandra suburb of Bombay. As of 2006 the archdiocese counted 277 diocesan priests, 283 religious priests, 383 male religious brothers and 1,530 religious sisters.

    Auxiliary Bishop Stephen Victor Fernandes described the Archdiocese of Bombay as a vital hub for the Catholic Church in India due to its geopolitical importance and pastoral impact. The archdiocese serves approximately 500,000 baptized Catholics within a territory of more than 21 million people, covering the Mumbai metropolis, its suburbs, and several districts in Maharashtra. The Bishop identified social inequality and urban poverty as the greatest challenges facing the Church. He noted that the archdiocese operates amidst extreme wealth in financial and commercial centers alongside areas of extreme poverty, unemployment, and precarious housing. Much of the Church's mission takes place in the outskirts and slums, including the Dharavi slum, which is one of the largest in the world with an estimated population of one million people.
