The Territorial Abbey of Monte Oliveto Maggiore in Tuscany, mother house of the Olivetan Benedictine Congregation, was founded by Bernardo Tolomei in 1313 and made an abbey nullius (territorial abbey) on 18 January 1765. It is immediately subject to the Holy See and comprises 4 parishes in the comune of Asciano, province of Siena, with only a few hundred inhabitants. The abbot of Monte Oliveto, currently Diego Gualtiero Rosa, O.S.B. Oliv. (since 2010), is ex officio abbot general of the Olivetans.
