History

A Latin Church diocese of central Italy's Tuscany, Massa Marittima-Piombino (Latin: Dioecesis Massana-Plumbinensis) carried the name Diocese of Massa Marittima until 1978. It answered to the archdiocese of Pisa as a suffragan until 1458, and since that year has been a suffragan of the Archdiocese of Siena. Its territory takes in the islands of Elba and Pianosa, and until 1817 also included Capraia.
