History

A Roman Catholic diocese of Lithuania, Šiauliai (Latin: Dioecesis Siauliensis) received its present structure and territory on May 27, 1997. It spans 7,696 km2 (2,971 sq mi) as a suffragate of the Archdiocese of Kaunas. In 2004 it counted about 269,861 believers (79.7% of the population), with 65 priests and 67 parishes. The Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul in Šiauliai has been assigned as the diocesan cathedral, and the Hill of Crosses is the principal place of pilgrimage. Darius Trijonis has been the bishop since 2024.
