History

Founded in the 14th century as the Diocese of Vilnius, this Lithuanian see (Latin: Archidioecesis Vilnensis; Lithuanian: Vilniaus arkivyskupija) was raised to the rank of metropolitan archdiocese by Pope Pius XI on 28 October 1925. Two suffragan sees, Kaišiadorys and Panevėžys, belong to its province. The archbishop's seat and mother church is the Cathedral-Basilica of St. Stanislaus and St.
