History

A see of ancient standing in Italy, Lucca (Latin: Archidioecesis Lucensis) dates as a diocese to at least the 4th century and became an archdiocese in 1726. The archbishop's seat is in the cathedral of S. Martino in Lucca. Though an archdiocese, it is not a metropolitan see, holds no suffragan dioceses, and is exempt, that is, immediately subject to the Holy See (Papacy).
