History

Set in north-western Tuscany in the valley of the Frigido River, the Diocese of Massa Carrara-Pontremoli (Latin: Dioecesis Massensis-Apuana) is a Latin diocese and a suffragan of the Archdiocese of Pisa. The city of Massa lies on the south side of the river, 5 km (3 mi) from the Tyrrhenian Sea, while Carrara sits 6 km (4 mi) to its north on the Carrione River. The see's name has shifted over time: the historical Diocese of Massa Carrara became the Diocese of Apuania in 1939, then the Diocese of Massa in 1986, and in 1988 it was joined with the Diocese of Pontremoli.

    Representatives from the Diocese of Massa Carrara–Pontremoli attended the national conference of diocesan catechetical offices in Rome from September 25 to 27. Sister Sandra Borruto, the diocesan director, and Silvia Laudanna represented the diocese at the event titled Abitare i passaggi di vita. The conference focused on shifting Italian catechesis and pastoral work toward adults. Participants discussed prioritizing life transitions and crises as theological spaces for sharing the faith. The Diocese of Massa Carrara–Pontremoli is currently implementing an experimental program through its Office of Evangelization and Catechesis. While this program targets children, it works through families as a primary point of contact.

  • Diocese of Massa Carrara–Pontremoli launches new website

    The Diocese of Massa Carrara–Pontremoli launched a new website and a diocesan logo during a press conference in Massa on Friday, September 25. The event took place at the Sala della Resistenza in Palazzo Ducale. The new digital platform resulted from months of collaboration with the SiCEI, the IT service of the Italian Episcopal Conference. Alessandro Biancalani, director of the diocesan office for social communications, introduced the conference. Giovanni Silvestri, the national head of SiCEI, spoke about how the Italian Church has used digital tools for over 20 years to support Italian dioceses and parishes. Silvestri noted that an institutional web presence serves as a pastoral reference point and a documentary archive for Italian dioceses.
