The Archdiocese of Mexico is the Latin rite metropolitan and primatial see of Mexico, erected in 1530 and elevated to an archdiocese in 1546. It is led by Cardinal Carlos Aguiar Retes, who has served as Primate Archbishop since 2018.

History

Seated in Mexico City, the Archdiocese of Mexico (Latin: Archidioecesis Mexicanensis) began as a diocese erected on 2 September 1530 and was elevated to an archdiocese on 12 February 1546. With more than four million Catholics it ranks among the largest in the world, exceeded only by Kinshasa, Guadalajara, São Paulo, Puebla de los Ángeles, Santiago de Guatemala, and Milan.

The Cardinal encouraged the practice of meditation to recognize spiritual movements within a person. He used the example of feeling an internal impulse to provide food to a hungry migrant as a way to identify how God speaks to the individual.
