History

A Latin Church diocese of the Catholic Church in North Macedonia, the Diocese of Skopje (Macedonian: Скопска бискупија, romanized: Skopska biskupija) traces a long and layered history. From the 4th century until 1656, when it took the name Archdiocese of Skopje, it was known as the Archdiocese of Dardania. In 1969 it was joined with the Roman Catholic Diocese of Prizren to form the Diocese of Skopje-Prizren, and in 2000 it became a suffragan of the Archdiocese of Vrhbosna. Its bishop is Kiro Stojanov, appointed in 2005.

  • Pope Leo XIV celebrates Mass for 800,000 in Paris

    Pope Leo XIV celebrated Mass for approximately 800,000 people on Sept. 26 in Paris, drawing 200,000 more attendees than the 600,000 who had originally registered. The crowd gathered along the Champs-Elysees from the Arc de Triomphe to the Place de la Concorde. During his homily, the pope urged the people of France to find true happiness and peace by following Jesus and seeking the pierced heart of Jesus. The Mass included 2,400 priests and deacons, as well as about 100 bishops. Six altar servers with Down syndrome assisted during the liturgy. As the pope traveled through the Place de la Concorde in the popemobile, he offered blessings to dozens of babies and young children held out from the crowd. Attendees waited for several hours, sometimes in drizzling rain, to participate in the event. The papal visit to Paris is expected to cost 27 million euros.
