The cathedral
Basilica Cattedrale di Santa Maria Assunta stands in Padova, the church that holds the cathedra from which this see takes its name.
On what a cathedral is, see the cathedral; every see church on earth is gathered at the cathedrals.
History
One of the older sees of northern Italy, the Diocese of Padua (Italian: Diocesi di Padova; Latin: Dioecesis Patavina) was erected in the 3rd century and serves the Veneto region as a Latin diocese of the Catholic Church. For most of its history it stood as a suffragan (subordinate) of the Patriarchate of Aquileia; when that Patriarchate was permanently suppressed in 1752, Padua passed under the Archdiocese of Udine as its suffragan.

Pope Leo XIV issues message for 112th World Day of Migrants and Refugees
Pope Leo XIV has released a message for the 112th World Day of Migrants and Refugees, scheduled for Sunday, September 27, 2026. The theme, "Even just one of these children," focuses on the vulnerability of minors who are forced to leave their homes due to war, poverty, violence, and environmental disasters. The Pope notes that millions of children and adolescents are displaced annually and calls on the conscience of the faithful to recognize their unique stories and needs. The message serves as an invitation for parishes to celebrate the liturgy on Sunday with a focus on reflection and fraternity regarding migrants.
