The Archdiocese of Papeete is the Latin rite metropolitan see of French Polynesia, seated at Papeete Cathedral on Tahiti. Erected in 1848 as the Vicariate Apostolic of Tahiti, it was elevated to a metropolitan archdiocese in 1966 with the Diocese of Taiohae o Tefenuaenata as its suffragan.

History

French Polynesia's Catholic metropolitan see is the Archdiocese of Papeete (Latin: Archidioecesis Papeetensis; French: Archidiocèse de Papeete), which oversees the suffragan diocese of Taiohae o Tefenuaenata. Its lineage runs through the Vicariate of Eastern Oceania, founded in 1833, whose successor, the Vicariate Apostolic of Tahiti, was established in 1848 and elevated to the Archdiocese of Papeete in 1966.
