History

Counted among the older ecclesiastical territories of the Philippines, the Diocese of Surigao (Lat: Dioecesis Surigensis) was erected in 1939 from territory of the Archdiocese of Cagayan de Oro, of which it remains a suffragan. A further division came in 1978, when the Diocese of Tandag was split off. Its jurisdiction covers the two provinces of Surigao del Norte and the Dinagat Islands. The current bishop, Antonieto Dumagan Cabajog, was appointed on July 24, 2001.
