History

Founded in the 4th century, the see of Pisa in Italy was raised to an archdiocese on 21 April 1092 by Pope Urban II. The Archdiocese of Pisa (Latin: Archidioecesis Pisana) is a Latin Church metropolitan see whose bishop sits in the cathedral of the Assumption in the Piazza del Duomo. Its archbishop presides over the Ecclesiastical Province of Pisa, comprising the dioceses of Livorno, Massa Carrara-Pontremoli, Pescia, and Volterra.

  • Fondazione Madonna del Soccorso to open new Rsa in Bientina

    The Madonna del Soccorso Foundation will inaugurate the Madonna del Sacro Cuore residential care facility in Bientina on Saturday, October 3. The new center, located in the Archdiocese of Pisa, can accommodate 48 elderly residents who require full-time care and six people in its day center. Archbishop of Pisa Saverio Cannistrà, Bishop of San Miniato Giovanni Paccosi, and Bishop Emeritus of Pistoia Fausto Tardelli will preside over the ceremony. The event begins with a Mass followed by a procession with the Madonna to the facility, where officials will perform a traditional ribbon-cutting. This project marks the first time the foundation has built a facility outside the Diocese of San Miniato. The foundation developed the center following requests from the Bientina municipal administration and the Santa Maria Assunta parish. Local social and community groups participated in the two-year planning process to create a social project alongside the physical construction. The foundation placed the first stone for the building on October 6, 2024.
