Diocese of Prato

History

An independent entity only since 1954, the Diocese of Prato (Latin: Dioecesis Pratensis) is a Latin diocese of the Catholic Church in Tuscany, Italy, and a suffragan of the Archdiocese of Florence. Its see, Prato Cathedral, stands on the Bisenzio River some 10 miles (17 km) northwest of Florence.

• Bishop Giovanni Nerbini to preside over the Eucharistic celebration for the new parish priest of Figline

  Bishop Giovanni Nerbini will preside over a Mass to welcome Marco Galgano as the new parish priest of Figline. The celebration is scheduled for Friday, September 25, at 9:00 p.m. at the Church of San Pietro. Vicar General Daniele Scaccini will concelebrate the liturgy alongside other priests. Father Galgano succeeds Giuseppe Billi, who served as the parish priest since 1977 after working there as a parochial vicar starting in 1970. Father Billi has lived at the ecclesiastical college in Florence for the past year. Father Galgano entered the Prato seminary in 2012 and was ordained a priest by Bishop Franco Agostinelli on December 17, 2017. Before this assignment, he served at the Santa Maria delle Carceri sanctuary, where he managed liturgical matters under the guidance of Carlo Stancari.

• AMEI to hold national conference in Prato

  The Association of Italian Ecclesiastical Museums (AMEI) will hold its 2026 national conference on October 9 and 10 at the San Domenico Monumental Complex in Prato. Antonella Pinna, president of ICOM Italy for 2026–2028, will speak on the relationship between museums, the local territory, and the community. Father Antonio Loffredo, vice president of the Fondazione Napoli C’entro, will also share his experience regarding urban regeneration.

• Diocese of Prato schools register 2470 students

  Catholic schools in the Diocese of Prato have registered 2,470 students for the 2026-2027 school year. The enrollment is distributed across 132 classes spanning from nurseries to high schools. The 18 Catholic schools in the diocesan coordination include nine nurseries, 16 preschools, nine primary schools, one middle school, and one high school. Of the total enrollment, 618 students are foreign nationals, representing 25% of the student body. The figures also include 59 students with certifications and 87 students facing difficulties. Don Serafino Romeo, who manages the coordination of Catholic schools for the diocesan school office, noted that these institutions function as non-state public schools within the public education system. To support the student population, the number of teachers has increased from 268 to 300.

• Diocese of Prato prepares for St. Francis' feast
