Latin-rite apostolic vicariate in the Paraguayan Chaco, named after the Pilcomayo River; established as an apostolic prefecture in 1925 and elevated to an apostolic vicariate on 14 July 1950 by Pope Pius XII. It is immediately exempt to the Holy See and covers about 125,000 square kilometers. Its seat is the Catedral Santa Maria in Mariscal Estigarribia, Boqueron Department.

History
A Latin Church missionary territory in Paraguay, the Vicariate Apostolic of Pilcomayo (Latin: Apostolicus Vicariatus Pilcomayoënsis) belongs to no ecclesiastical province: it is exempt, answering directly to the Holy See through the Roman Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples. Its cathedral episcopal see is the (Marian) Catedral Santa María in Mariscal Estigarribia, an area around national capital Asunción, in Boquerón department.
