Erected 7 July 1994 by Pope John Paul II from the Diocese of Cabimas, the Archdiocese of Maracaibo and the Archdiocese of Merida; it is a suffragan of the Archdiocese of Maracaibo. Its cathedral is the Our Lady of Perpetual Help Cathedral in El Vigia.
