History

Venice is the seat of one of only four extant patriarchates in the Latin Church of the Catholic Church: the Patriarchate of Venice (Italian: Patriarcato di Venezia; Latin: Patriarchatus Venetiarum), sometimes also called the Archdiocese of Venice, located in the Metropolitan City of Venice. Its ordinary, the Patriarch of Venice, is by tradition created a cardinal by the pope, and his episcopal seat is the Cathedral Basilica of St. Mark.
