The Latin rite Diocese of Kon Tum in Vietnam's Central Highlands was erected as an Apostolic Vicariate on 18 January 1932 and elevated to a diocese on 24 November 1960. A suffragan of the Archdiocese of Hue, its cathedral is the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Kon Tum.

History

First erected as a Vicariate Apostolic on January 18, 1932, and elevated to a diocese on November 24, 1960, the Diocese of Kon Tum (Latin: Dioecesis Kontumensis) surrounds the city of Kon Tum and spans 25,728 km2 of central Vietnam as a suffragan of the Archdiocese of Huế. In 1967 part of its territory was detached to form the new Diocese of Ban Mê Thuột. More than 16% of the million people living in its area are Roman Catholics, many of them members of ethnic minorities. Aloysius Gonzaga Nguyễn Hùng Vị has been bishop since 2015.

    Pope Leo XIV visited the UNESCO headquarters in Paris on Friday, September 25, marking the first papal visit to the organization since 1980. During his visit, the pope addressed diplomats, academics, and youth delegates, calling for peace to be built through justice, truth, dialogue, and trust. In his speech, the pope emphasized that human dignity must remain at the center of education, science, culture, and technology. He warned that in the era of artificial intelligence, human dignity risks being cast aside in favor of efficiency and productivity. He noted a paradox where computational systems are granted the name of human thought, while human relations risk being impoverished by dehumanization. Upon arriving at the Pavillon d’Honneur, the pope was welcomed by UNESCO Director-General Khaled Ahmed El-Enany Ali Ezz and Msgr. Roberto Campisi, the Vatican's permanent observer. Following a bilateral meeting with the director-general, the pope signed the guestbook and exchanged gifts.

  • Pope Leo XIV prays at Grotto of Massabielle in Lourdes

    Pope Leo XIV prayed at the Grotto of Massabielle in Lourdes on the evening of September 26, 2026, during his apostolic journey to France. After landing at Tarbes-Lourdes-Pyrénées Airport, the Pope traveled by car and open car to the Grotto, briefly greeting the mayor of Lourdes while crossing the Leo XIV Bridge. Upon arriving at the Grotto, the Pope was welcomed by Bishop Jean-Marc Micas of Tarbes and Lourdes and the sanctuary rector, Father Michel Daubanes. During his visit, the Pope spent a moment in silent prayer before the statue of the Virgin Mary, touched the rock of the grotto, and drank water from the spring. He also lit a candle and placed a Golden Rose at the foot of the statue. In his prayers, the Pope asked for the protection of France, families, young people, the poor, the sick, and those who suffer. He also prayed for peace in the world and for leaders to act with wisdom and generosity to protect fundamental human rights. The visit concluded with the Pope reciting the Lord’s Prayer and imparting his blessing before dining privately at the bishop's residence.
