History

Northeastern Ohio in the United States is served by the Diocese of Youngstown (Latin: Dioecesis Youngstonensis), a Latin Church diocese of the Catholic Church and a suffragan of the metropolitan Archdiocese of Cincinnati. Six counties make up its territory: Mahoning, Trumbull, Columbiana, Stark, Portage, and Ashtabula. St. Columba Cathedral in Youngstown is the diocesan mother church.

The St. Francis of Assisi Pet Blessing will take place at Calvary Cemetery, Youngstown, on Saturday, October 3, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. On Monday, October 12, 2026, the Precious Lives Prayer Service is scheduled for 10:00 a.m. at Calvary Cemetery, Massillon, to remember babies lost through miscarriage and stillbirth. The organization will also attend the Senior Expo at Belden Village, Canton, on Saturday, October 17, 2026, from 8:30 a.m.–2:30 p.m. Additionally, an End-of-Life Planning Dinner & Learn is set for Wednesday, October 21, 2026, at 6:00 p.m. at La Pizzeria, Canton.

  • SACRAMENT OF CONFIRMATION FOR ADULTS (Bulletin Materials)

    The Diocese of Youngstown will celebrate the Sacrament of Confirmation for adults on Sunday, November 22, 2026, at 5:00 p.m. at St. Columba Cathedral. Adults aged 18 or older who have not yet received the sacrament may participate. Candidates must register through their local parish and verify their baptism and marital status to confirm eligibility. The diocese will hold a preparation program at the parish level. Sponsors for the candidates must be practicing Catholics who have already received both baptism and confirmation, and they cannot be the candidate's parent. Interested individuals should contact their parish office to register and verify eligibility.

    The Diocese of Youngstown has released its October 2026 digital communique, which includes updated procedures for parish bulletins and publicity. The diocese has replaced the previous Communique Attachments folder with new Shared Publicity Folders. Employees of diocese-affiliated parishes, schools, or lay organizations can request editor access to upload their own publicity materials to these folders. The October 2026 folder is available for viewing via a shared link, and a text-only version of the bulletin announcements is available for download. The October edition of The Catholic Echo also highlights the month of the Holy Rosary, encouraging the faithful to pray the Rosary and meditate on the Joyful, Sorrowful, Glorious, and Luminous mysteries.
