History

Twenty-three counties of central Ohio in the United States fall within the Diocese of Columbus (Latin: Dioecesis Columbensis), erected in 1868. A suffragan see within the province of the metropolitan Archdiocese of Cincinnati, it has St. Joseph Cathedral in Columbus as its mother church. As of 2026 its bishop is Earl K. Fernandes.

  • Catholics Adopt ‘Open Heaven’ Concept

    Some Catholics have begun spreading the "open heaven" concept, a teaching originating from the non-Catholic Word of Faith movement. According to Father Thomas Buffer in The Catholic Times, proponents of this idea suggest that those who walk under an open heaven have access to healing, financial blessings, and supernatural power. The teaching traces back to Presbyterian missionary John A. MacMillan, who wrote in The Authority of the Believer that Christians share in the full authority of the risen Christ. MacMillan taught that instead of asking God for things, believers can command heavenly power, suggesting that God obeys when believers speak words of command. Preacher Kenneth E. Hagin later helped popularize these teachings, which view heaven primarily as a source of power.

  • Diocese of Columbus hosts clergy learning day on child protection

    Priests and deacons from the Diocese of Columbus gathered at Sunbury St. John Neumann Church’s Faith and Family Center on Sept. 22 for a safe environment learning day. The diocesan Safe Environment Office hosted the event to help clergy lead in child protection and safety. The program included presentations from experts on human trafficking, online safety, victim assistance, and ministry. Speakers included Molly Fara, associate director for the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops Secretariat of Child and Youth Protection; Sister Sally Duffy, SC, from the Alliance to End Human Trafficking; David Frattare, statewide commander for the Ohio Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force; and Crispin Ketelhut Montelione, a training director for VIRTUS Programs. Meredith Gaul, the manager of the diocesan Safe Environment Office, said the day provides focused education on current and emerging issues to build on the ongoing formation clergy already receive. She stated the goal is for priests and deacons to be better informed to protect those in their care.
