St. Mark's Roman Catholic Church in San Marcos was established in March 1963 with Rev. William D. Spain as founding pastor, with the first Masses held in a converted theater and then a lumber shed. The present 800-seat church opened on Easter Sunday 1979, and the parish operates the Deer Springs mission church opened in 1994.
