Bishop Hiiboro calls for peace

Bishop Barani Eduardo Hiiboro Kussala of the Catholic Diocese of Tombura-Yambio called for peace, justice, and reconciliation in Sudan and South Sudan on the International Day of Peace, September 21.

As chairperson of the Justice and Peace Commission of the Sudan and South Sudan Catholic Bishops’ Conference, Bishop Hiiboro said peace requires more than just the absence of war. He stated that true peace necessitates dignity, security, and the courage to rebuild trust. He urged political leaders, religious and traditional leaders, citizens, women, and young people to use dialogue instead of confrontation and to ensure public authority serves the common good.

The bishop also addressed upcoming electoral processes in both countries, asking that the rights and dignity of every citizen be respected. He called for prayers for victims of violence, refugees, displaced families, and children living in fear. Bishop Hiiboro noted that while the people of these nations have endured displacement and grief, they continue to hope, and he urged society to leave a legacy of peace for future generations.
