Cardinal Carlos Aguiar Retes appoints Father Eduardo Chávez to lead Mexico’s preparations for 500th anniversary of Our Lady of Guadalupe apparitions

Cardinal Carlos Aguiar Retes, the primate archbishop of Mexico, has appointed Father Eduardo Chávez to represent the Archdiocese of Mexico in preparing for the 500th anniversary of the apparitions of Our Lady of Guadalupe. The celebrations for the fifth centenary are scheduled for 2031.

In a letter dated Sept. 22, the cardinal named Chávez to oversee matters concerning the content of the Guadalupan event during the upcoming preparations and celebrations. The cardinal cited Chávez's specific experience and preparation in the subject as the reason for the appointment.

Chávez serves as a theologian at the Basilica of Guadalupe in Mexico City and is the postulator for the cause of St. Juan Diego. He also leads the Higher Institute of Guadalupan Studies, an organization he has headed for over 25 years to conduct research and spread the message of the apparitions.
