Zambia Conference of Catholic Bishops Expresses Solidarity with Archbishop Banda

The Zambia Conference of Catholic Bishops issued a statement on September 28 expressing solidarity with Archbishop Alick Banda of the Archdiocese of Lusaka following his appearance before the Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC). The bishops called for fairness, dignity, and due process for the archbishop as he undergoes the process.

The DEC has reportedly charged Archbishop Banda with possession of property reasonably believed to have been unlawfully obtained. The allegation concerns a blue Toyota Hilux, registration number ALF 7734, which the DEC says the archbishop possessed between 22 April 2021 and 27 December 2023. The commission alleges the vehicle was the property of the Zambia Revenue Authority and is part of a wider investigation involving approximately 22 Zambia Revenue Authority motor vehicles allegedly disposed of improperly.

The bishops asked for spiritual solidarity with the archbishop and affirmed their respect for his pastoral ministry and dedication to serving the Church and the nation. They called upon all concerned to ensure that principles of fairness and dignity are upheld without prejudice or intimidation.
