Chicago and Chiclayo Pray for Pope Leo XIV

Catholic IntelligenceUpdated 1 min read

The Diocese of Chiclayo in Peru and the Archdiocese of Chicago are holding prayers for the health of Pope Leo XIV.

In Chicago, Archbishop Blase Cupich, a former classmate of the pope, asked the faithful to pray for the pope's recovery and for the guidance of surgeons. Villanova University, where the pope studied mathematics, also requested prayers for the former student. The university intends to proceed with an honorary medal ceremony scheduled for Tuesday afternoon despite the pope's absence.

The Diocese of Chiclayo, where the pope served as bishop from 2015 to 2023, organized a Mass to pray for his health. Father Hugo Sánchez, pastor of Immaculate Conception Parish, said the diocese is praying for the pope following news of his condition. The diocese is also preparing for a future visit from the pope.
