Diocese of Columbus introduces Mental Health Ministry
The Diocese of Columbus will introduce its Mental Health Ministry during a special Mass of Anticipation on Saturday, Oct. 10, at St. Joseph Cathedral in Columbus. Bishop Earl Fernandes will celebrate the 5:15 p.m. liturgy to recognize mental health professionals, caregivers, and individuals facing mental health challenges.
The Vicariate of Catholic Social Doctrine has worked since January to develop the ministry to support parishes, schools, families, clergy, and communities. To assist this work, the diocese formed a Mental Health Advisory Board this year composed of clergy, mental health professionals, and people with lived experience.
The launch follows Pope Leo XIV's October prayer intention, which asks for mental health ministries to be established throughout the Church to reduce stigma and discrimination. The diocese also encourages the faithful to participate in the U.S. Church's Novena for Mental Health from Oct. 10 to Oct. 18.
