Diocese of Parramatta launches new theological formation program for lay leaders
The Diocese of Parramatta has partnered with BBI-The Australian Institute of Theological Education to offer a subsidized Undergraduate Certificate in Theology for lay parishioners. The program provides formal theological education to help men and women take active roles in the mission of the Church.
Applications are open for the first group of students, who will begin classes in the first semester of 2027. This program fulfills a commitment in the Diocesan Pastoral Plan for a Synodal Church to strengthen the formation of lay people. The plan includes a priority to sponsor equal numbers of men and women to study theology, ecclesiology, and pastoral models.
Bishop Vincent Long stated that formation is necessary to build a stronger Church. He noted that the 2023 Diocesan Synod emphasized the need for substantial training so that lay people can respond more meaningfully to their baptismal call and participate in the life of the Church.
