Diocese of Youngstown Marks 100th World Mission Sunday on October 18

Catholic IntelligenceUpdated 1 min read

The Diocese of Youngstown will celebrate the 100th anniversary of World Mission Sunday on October 18. Established by Pope Pius XI in 1926, the annual observance focuses on the responsibility of the universal Church to proclaim the Gospel to all nations.

This year's theme, "One in Christ, United in Mission," was chosen by Pope Leo XIV to encourage unity through baptismal identity and missionary zeal. The diocese notes that the first collection for this observance took place in October 1927.

Parishes throughout Mahoning, Trumbull, Columbiana, Stark, Portage, and Ashtabula counties will hold second collections to support various missionary efforts. These funds will benefit The Pontifical Mission Societies, which serves 1,130 mission dioceses in Asia, Africa, Latin America, Oceania, and the Middle East. Local contributions will also support Catholic Home Missions and the Black and Indian Missions within the United States.
