Four US states to vote on abortion referendums
Voters in Idaho, Missouri, Nevada, and Virginia will decide on abortion referendums during the November 2026 midterm elections. While churches and faith-based organizations are mobilizing across the country, recent polling indicates the issue may have less political prominence than in previous years.
An October survey by the Pew Research Center found that 46% of registered voters consider abortion a very important factor in their voting decisions. This is a decrease from the 56% of voters who cited the issue as very important during the 2022 midterm elections. In the same survey, voters ranked the economy at 84% and the future of American democracy at 73% as more significant concerns.
Religious affiliation influences how voters prioritize the issue. According to the Pew Research Center, 58% of white evangelical Protestants consider abortion very important, compared to 42% of Catholics. Black Protestants reported a 40% importance rating, while 31% of white non-evangelical Protestants and 45% of voters with no religious affiliation identified it as a top priority.
