Pope Leo XIV underwent successful thoracic surgery on Oct. 13 to remove the lower lobe of his right lung at Gemelli University Hospital in Rome. A medical statement from the Holy See Press Office, issued by the pope's personal physician Dr. Luigi Carbone and Professor Stefano Margaritora, confirmed that an intraoperative examination diagnosed the removed tissue as lung adenocarcinoma.
The surgery used a video-assisted technique to ensure the radical removal of the tumor. The procedure lasted approximately 90 minutes, though the pope remained in the operating room for about three hours. Doctors reported no complications, and the pope regained consciousness normally before returning to his hospital room on the tenth floor.
The Vatican has canceled all scheduled audiences through Oct. 20. The pope is expected to remain at Gemelli Hospital for one week of recovery. While the diagnosis was confirmed during the operation, the pope had previously announced on Oct. 11 that doctors had detected a small, localized nodule in his lung.
