Jordan's Church leaders back bill expanding legal options for Christian families
The Council of Heads of Churches in Jordan welcomed the Cabinet's approval of a bill to amend the Christian Denominations Councils Law. The bill has been referred to Parliament to complete the constitutional process.
The proposed changes would allow Christians to manage personal status matters through their own church laws. These matters include marriage, divorce, wills, inheritance, and adoption. The council stated that the churches cooperated during the drafting process to create a unified legal framework for these needs.
In a statement issued Oct. 11, the council thanked King Abdullah II, the prime minister, and Cabinet members for addressing these issues. The council said the Cabinet's approval shows a state commitment to protecting citizen rights and respecting religious traditions. The group added that Christians are an integral part of Jordan's history and national development.
