Ministry with Persons with Disabilities – Suggested Text for Parish Bulletins

The Diocese of Youngstown's Office of Faith Formation and Lay Ecclesial Ministry has provided suggested text for parish bulletins to help churches include people with disabilities in sacramental preparation, liturgical ministries, and community building.

The suggestions, sourced from the National Partnership on Disabilities, include specific language for various communication needs. For parishioners with developmental disabilities such as autism spectrum disorder, the text asks for patience regarding behaviors that may seem inappropriate during Mass to support the efforts of parents and catechists.

To assist those with mobility needs, the text notes that guests using wheelchairs, walkers, or other aids may sit wherever they are comfortable. It also welcomes service animals for people who are blind or have other disabilities. The guide suggests that individuals needing help finding accessible seating or requesting the Eucharist be brought to them should inform an usher. Additionally, the text notes that registration for parish faith formation is open to everyone.

The diocese offers resources through the Catechist Cafe and the Diocesan Library to help Catholic organizations become more adaptive to special needs and abilities.
