Pope Leo XIV is medically fit to proceed with his upcoming apostolic journey to South America, according to his surgeon, Professor Stefano Margaritora. In an interview with Vatican News, Margaritora stated there are no clinical reasons to cancel the trip, which is scheduled to take place from November 6 to 17, 2026.
Margaritora, who performed lung surgery on the Pope on October 13, described the procedure as routine and noted that the Pope has been an ideal patient. The surgeon reported that the Pope's clinical condition was positive at the time of discharge, with normal blood tests, stable heart function, and lung expansion progressing as expected. The Pope requires approximately ten more days to reach a full recovery.
Margaritora is a professor at the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart and the director of the surgery department at the Agostino Gemelli IRCCS University Hospital Foundation.
