Nigerian Bishop Sylvester Luka Gopep says Christians must confront workplace injustice
Sylvester Luka Gopep, the auxiliary bishop of the Diocese of Minna, said Christians must confront injustice in their professions to fulfill their responsibility of bearing witness to Jesus Christ. Speaking during a centenary celebration for World Mission Day organized by the Pontifical Mission Societies in Nigeria on Oct. 18, Gopep told ACI Africa that failing to address workplace injustice constitutes a failure in missionary work.
The bishop urged Catholics to view their jobs and homes as areas for evangelization where their behavior reflects Gospel values. He noted that teachers, doctors, lawyers, businesspeople, and politicians should all practice their roles with sincerity, justice, and truth to serve the common good.
Gopep told ACI Africa that corruption, cheating, and insincerity contradict the Christian faith and damage the credibility of the Church's mission. He emphasized that missionary responsibility is mandatory for every baptized Catholic, whether ordained or unordained, regardless of their social status or financial situation.
