Prince Alois of Liechtenstein vetoes abortion legalization bill
Hereditary Prince Alois of Liechtenstein vetoed a bill to legalize abortion during the first 12 weeks of pregnancy. The Princely House announced the decision on October 20, stating that the reform is not compatible with protecting unborn life as a fundamental legal value.
The Liechtenstein parliament, known as the Landtag, approved the measure on September 2 by a 13-12 vote. The parliament also declined to hold a popular referendum on the law. Under the constitution of the principality, no law takes effect without the approval of the reigning prince.
Abortion remains a crime in Liechtenstein except in cases of rape or when there is a grave danger to the woman's life or health. The Princely House stated that Prince Alois supports increased counseling and assistance for women before, during, and after pregnancy.
