The Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith released a document titled Venite ad me (Come to Me) on October 22, 2026, addressing the crisis in passing on the Christian faith during a period of significant cultural change. Signed by Cardinal Víctor Manuel Fernández, the text explores how the Church can strengthen evangelization amid challenges such as digital technologies, changing family structures, and a breakdown in intergenerational faith transmission.

The document, which consists of eight chapters and more than 25,000 words, calls for the Church to move beyond a pastoral model focused solely on children and teenagers to include the evangelization of adults. It emphasizes the kerygma, or the essential proclamation of salvation through Christ's death and resurrection, as the center of the Church's mission. The text highlights the importance of personal witness, liturgy, prayer, and community life in making the Gospel present in contemporary society.

Pope Leo XIV approved the document for publication during an August 21 audience with Cardinal Fernández and Msgr. Armando Matteo, the secretary for the doctrinal section. The work was written in response to a request made by the late Pope Francis toward the end of his life. The text also engages with themes from Pope Leo XIV's first encyclical, Magnifica Humanitas, regarding artificial intelligence.

Pope Leo XIV told participants at an international congress for school and university pastoral care that Catholic educational institutions should serve as homes where young people feel loved and encouraged. Speaking at the Vatican on October 22, the pope urged teachers and pastoral workers to help students overcome the fear of failure and discover their talents.

The pope addressed the congress organized by the Dicastery for Culture and Education, noting that many young people feel lonely or uncertain about the future due to a performance-oriented culture. He stated that faith, education, and the search for truth must work together, and that Catholic schools and universities should be places of trust, acceptance, and human closeness.

Pope Leo XIV emphasized that Christian education should focus on educating the heart and building courage to help the next generation build a better world. He called for an educational environment that welcomes students and assists them in their search for truth.

Eva Gretzmacher and Claudia Abbt arrived in Benghazi, Libya, on Wednesday, October 21, following nearly two years in captivity. The humanitarian workers, an Austrian national and a Swiss national, were abducted separately in Agadez, Niger, in early 2025.

The Nigerien news agency Air Info reported their arrival in eastern Libya. A plane scheduled to depart Benghazi on Thursday, October 22, will stop in Vienna to deliver Gretzmacher to Austrian authorities before continuing to Switzerland with Abbt.

Gretzmacher was taken from her home in Agadez on January 11, 2025, and Abbt was kidnapped in the same city in April 2025. While various sources attribute the abductions to the Islamic State in the Sahel, the specific circumstances of their release remain undisclosed. Media reports suggest Saddam Haftar may have influenced their release, though his involvement has not been officially confirmed.

The Conference of French Bishops published a letter to young Catholics on Thursday, October 22, titled "Our only weapon is that of self-giving love." The bishops invite young people to reflect and share their thoughts following several weeks of protests by high school and university students that included instances of violence, looting, and property damage.

The bishops noted that while the protests express concerns regarding the future and a search for meaning, the accompanying violence has caused bitterness for those seeking peace. In the letter, the bishops reference Pope Leo XIV, who told young people at a prayer vigil at the Stade de France on September 24 that they are the saints of France.

The bishops encourage young Catholics to follow the Pope's guidance to move from confusion toward the truth. They highlight three specific actions requested by the Pope: to avoid pride, violence, and greed; to strive toward justice; and to combat specific challenges.

The training targets those responsible for communications and missionary animation to help them produce multimedia content for social media and a digital platform used by French-speaking Comboni provinces.

Father Fabrizio Colombo, Charles Ayetan, and Jacob Brahim Konfé are leading the sessions. Provincial Superior Father Fidèle Katsan noted that the instructors are participating in person rather than remotely via the missionary channel SMA TV to allow for direct interaction with the attendees.

Archbishop Paul Coakley received the Archbishop Fiorenza Dignity and Life Award from the Catholic Mobilizing Network on Oct. 21. The ceremony took place during the Justice Reimagined Awards and Celebration at the apostolic nunciature in Washington, D.C.

The award is named after Archbishop Joseph Fiorenza of Galveston-Houston, a civil rights advocate and death penalty abolitionist. Coakley, who serves as president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, noted his admiration for Fiorenza's work and principles.

During his acceptance speech, Coakley said his time in the United States has increased his focus on advocating for those on death row. He urged the Church and the nation to recognize the inhumanity of executions performed in their name. Coakley has a history of opposing the death penalty, including in Oklahoma and in an Oct. 9 statement where he criticized the Trump administration's plan to livestream the military execution of Nidal Hasan.

The Schoenstatt movement in Germany is asking anyone who knew its founder, Father Joseph Kentenich, to share documents and memories to assist in ongoing research into allegations against him. In an appeal published October 15, the movement specifically invited accounts of experiences perceived as abusive or as crossing boundaries.

The movement stated that historical research into the allegations is currently underway but far from complete, noting that the process could take years. Schoenstatt said it will collect and treat all submissions confidentially without prejudging the information. The organization noted that the evidence gathered may either confirm incriminating claims or show that the suspicions against Kentenich cannot be substantiated.

These investigations follow 2020 accusations by Church historian Alexandra von Teuffenbach, who cited files from a 1950s apostolic visitation to claim Kentenich engaged in coercive and manipulative behavior with members of the Schoenstatt Sisters of Mary. The Diocese of Trier suspended the beatification cause for Kentenich in 2022.

Chicago iconographer Joseph Malham created an icon of Our Lady of Good Counsel for Pope Leo XIV. The Pope received the artwork during a private audience in his library and intends to keep the image in his bedroom for personal prayer.

Chicago attorney Michael Airdo commissioned Malham to produce the icon as a gift for a planned trip to the Vatican. Airdo chose the subject of Our Lady of Good Counsel to honor the Pope's Augustinian roots, as the devotion is central to the Augustinian tradition. The Pope previously traveled to the Basilica Sanctuary of Our Mother of Good Counsel in Genazzano, Italy, to pray before the original image.

Malham completed the icon within a one-week timeframe following Airdo's request. Airdo later shared a photograph of the Pope holding the finished work during their meeting in Rome.

Briefing and sources: U.S. bishops urge continued immigration protections for Ukrainians, Salvadorans. Catholic News Agency

U.S. bishops are calling on the government to maintain immigration protections for Ukrainians and Salvadorans to prevent deportations and the separation of families. The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) stated that approximately 170,000 Salvadorans and 100,000 Ukrainians hold Temporary Protected Status (TPS), a designation for people from countries deemed unsafe due to conflict or disasters.

The bishops urged the administration to evaluate the threats to human life in these countries of origin and requested meaningful notice regarding future designation changes so that families, employers, and communities can prepare.

U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) issued an alert on Oct. 19 stating that Ukrainian TPS beneficiaries will keep their protections and employment authorization until a future announcement is made. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) confirmed on Oct. 22 that both Ukrainians and Salvadorans will retain their protections until the agency reaches a final decision on the status of these designations.

Briefing and sources: St. John’s Students Teach High Schoolers How to Keep the ‘Human’ in AI. The Tablet

St. John’s University freshmen taught visiting high school students how to use artificial intelligence ethically during an AI College Day event in Jamaica. The students, who are enrolled in adjunct professor Omar Lopez’s First Year Seminar 1000 course, led presentations on various aspects of the technology.

The presentations covered topics such as identifying AI bias, fact-checking AI output, protecting personal information, and preparing for the job market. One group, led by freshman Benjamin Shakov, focused on how applicants can use AI to improve resumes as employers increasingly use the technology to screen candidates.

High school students attended the event to learn how to use AI as a tool for learning rather than a replacement for their own work. Tenth grader Adalin Dominguez noted an interest in using the technology for good, while 11th grader Xavier Martinez from Bedford-Stuyvesant New Beginnings Charter School expressed a desire to use AI more effectively in his schoolwork.

Briefing and sources: LA Peruvian Catholics celebrate 'Milagros' tradition ahead of Pope Leo's Peru trip. Angelus News

Peruvian Catholics in Los Angeles held a Mass and procession on Oct. 18 to honor El Señor de los Milagros, the Lord of Miracles. The event began at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels and concluded at La Placita Church in Olvera Street.

The La Hermandad del Señor de los Milagros ministry organized the procession. More than 50 men wearing purple habits with white cords took turns carrying the anda, a religious float bearing the image of Christ. Participants, including Abraham Villalobos, who has carried the float for 15 years, use the physical weight of the procession as a form of personal prayer for family and health.

The celebration coincides with the traditional Purple Month in Peru, where the faithful participate in daily prayers and processions through Nov. 1. The devotion centers on a mural of Jesus on the cross, which tradition says was painted by an enslaved African man in Peru and survived a major earthquake in 1655.

Briefing and sources: A Rare but Growing Courage. Commonweal

The Archdiocese for the Military Services will host the first Catholic Military Conference from November 9 to 11. Sponsored by the nonterritorial archdiocese, the three day event offers formation, fellowship, and prayer based on the Church's Just War tradition for Catholic service members and their families.

Archbishop Timothy Broglio, who leads the military archdiocese, has recently criticized several actions by the current administration. Broglio previously stated it would be morally acceptable for Catholic soldiers to disobey orders to attack Greenland if the orders were unjust. He also described the administration's assassinations of suspected drug traffickers at sea as the illegal and immoral killing of noncombatants.

The conference features a plenary speaker who is critical of the war in Iran. This comes as Pope Leo XIV has labeled the current war as unjust. Broglio also recently denounced a proposal by Secretary of Defense Peter Hegseth to livestream the military execution of Nidal Malik Hasan, calling it a public spectacle that would imitate terrorist barbarism. Broglio noted that any Catholic soldier assigned to a firing squad should request to be excused from such duty.

Pope Leo XIV and the Pressure to Be Perfect: “Many Give Up Before Even Trying”

Briefing and sources: Pope Leo XIV and the Pressure to Be Perfect: “Many Give Up Before Even Trying”. Rome Reports

Pope Leo XIV identified three challenges for pastoral ministries in schools and universities: cultivating the inner life, developing a person-centered digital culture, and educating for peace.

Speaking on the pressures facing students, the Pope noted that a performance-driven culture often ranks and compares people ruthlessly. He stated that this misguided meritocracy fails to respect individuals and causes many to give up before they even try. He also highlighted that students often face insecurity, loneliness, and fear of the future, noting that the World Health Organization estimates one in seven adolescents aged 10 to 19 experiences a mental health disorder.

The Pope said school and university pastoral ministries should accompany the slow development of thought through teaching, discernment, and perseverance. He described educational processes as journeys that require time to mature and an engagement with reality beyond appearances. He encouraged schools and universities to be welcoming places where students can discover their abilities, interact socially, and find people willing to walk together.

Briefing and sources: Cardinal Filoni delves into God’s relationships with biblical figures, saints in new book. Catholic News Agency

Cardinal Fernando Filoni has authored a new book, "My Days Are in Your Hands: Men and Women in the Footsteps of Jesus," which analyzes how God interacted with various biblical figures and saints over the last 4,000 years.

The book examines the personal relationships between God and individuals ranging from Abraham to contemporary figures such as Mother Teresa and Edith Stein. Filoni told EWTN's Mitch Pacwa that the work is not a series of biographies, but rather an analysis of how God worked through the specific sufferings, problems, and difficult lives of these people. He noted that the text explores how these individuals, whom he described as normal people, became extraordinary by responding to the grace of God.

During a visit to the United States, Filoni, who serves as the grand master of the Order of the Holy Sepulchre, discussed the book on EWTN. He explained that the writing addresses the personal traumas faced by figures like Abraham, including his anxiety regarding his inability to have children before receiving his calling.

Briefing and sources: Movie Review: ‘Whalefall’. Catholic Review

The drama Whalefall follows a teenager named Jay Gardiner, played by Austin Abrams, who becomes trapped inside a whale while scuba diving. Kurt Jensen of the Catholic Review notes that while the film's premise has never been documented in real life, experts suggest the situation is barely possible.

The story begins with Jay's father, Mitt, played by Josh Brolin, a tour boat operator in Monterey, California. After receiving a terminal mesothelioma diagnosis, Mitt commits suicide by jumping into the ocean with weights. Following an empty-casket burial, Jay dives into the deep to search for remains of his father. During his search, Jay witnesses a fight between a sperm whale and a giant squid. He becomes entangled in a tentacle and is swallowed by the whale along with the squid.

With only one hour of oxygen remaining in his tank, Jay must rely on his father's past life lessons to survive. Jensen describes the film as containing disturbing imagery.

The action film The Fate of the Furious is currently available to stream on Netflix.

The movie follows a team of car racers, led by Vin Diesel, who face a criminal mastermind played by Charlize Theron. The plot involves the team hunting an opponent who uses advanced cyber skills and a specialized airplane to pursue world domination. While the film features humor and resourcefulness, John Mulderig of the Catholic Review notes that the story contains questionable ethics and frequent gunplay and hand-to-hand combat. Mulderig adds that the film includes some Christian detailing despite its dicey moral values and suggests it is not suitable for young viewers.
