South Sudanese Catholic Bishop Calls for Peace amid Talks of Dissolution of Transitional Government

Bishop Eduardo Hiiboro Kussala of the Diocese of Tombura-Yambio has called for peace and restraint in South Sudan as the country faces the possible dissolution of its transitional government. In a statement released Tuesday, September 22, Bishop Hiiboro said his appeal comes from his pastoral responsibility rather than political interests, noting that the nation has already suffered too much violence.

The bishop urged citizens not to let political differences turn into hatred or uncertainty turn into fear. He stated that the people of South Sudan have waited too long for peace and have buried too many loved ones.

The call for peace follows news regarding the potential end of the transitional government and preparations for national elections. While the transitional government was established in February 2020, the transition has been extended four times and elections have been repeatedly postponed. The National Elections Commission has scheduled general elections for December 22. Recent amendments to the electoral law, signed on September 21, allow the current executive leadership to remain in office until an elected president is chosen.
