Truth and Reconciliation

The Diocese of Antigonish has launched a permanent website page to support truth and reconciliation efforts following the 2022 apology from Pope Francis to the Indigenous Peoples of Canada. Bishop Wayne Kirkpatrick stated that the diocese intends to walk together with Indigenous communities to move toward a future of justice and healing.

The diocesan plan includes engaging Indigenous elders, chiefs, and faithful to learn about history and culture from their perspectives to address colonial viewpoints. The diocese will also host opportunities for Indigenous members to share their stories and will examine liturgical and administrative practices to better honor local Indigenous cultures.

As part of these efforts, the diocese will provide spiritual and financial support to the Indigenous Reconciliation Fund and promote local projects.
