Young members of the Order of Malta help the homeless in St. Peter's Square

Catholic IntelligenceUpdated 1 min read

Young professionals and students between 20 and 30 years old associated with the Rome chapter of the Sovereign Military Order of Malta provide food to homeless people near St. Peter's Square every Tuesday. The group of 10 to 15 volunteers follows a call from Pope Leo XIV to remain attentive to poverty.

The volunteers meet at 8:30 p.m. in Piazza della Città Leonina to pray before walking to St. Peter's Square and Via della Conciliazione. They distribute broth, coffee, fruit, and snacks that they provide themselves, allowing recipients to choose what they want to receive.

Luigi Salvaggi, the head of the youth group, said that faith and prayer lead the members to put themselves in the background. He described serving the poor as a concrete moral duty that is essential for both believers and society.
