St. Rita's was founded in 1913 by Fr. Marco Tullio Simmonetti to serve Italian immigrants in the New Lots section of Brooklyn; its first solemn Mass was celebrated on Easter Sunday 1914. Today it is a predominantly Spanish-speaking parish of the Diocese of Brooklyn.
