Founded as Mission San Rafael Arcangel in 1817 by Father Vicente de Sarria, it became a parish in 1884 and is part of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of San Francisco. The parish includes the main church, Mission San Rafael Arcangel, St. Sylvester’s Chapel, and Saint Raphael School (preschool through eighth grade).
