Sacred Heart Parish (Punta Gorda)

Punta Gorda, FL

Sacred Heart Catholic Parish in Punta Gorda, Florida, has been serving the community since 1929. Prior to its establishment as a parish, priests from Tampa, Sebring, and Arcadia ministered to the area's Catholics. The first Mass was celebrated at the Charlotte Harbor Hotel on Christmas Day, 1929. In September 1954, Sacred Heart became an official parish with Father William J. O’Farrell as its first pastor. Over the years, several rectors have led the community, including Fathers John Scully and James Quinn. The church underwent significant renovations following Hurricane Charley in 2004, reopening in 2008 under the guidance of Father Jerome Kaywell.
